Gas Certification

Gas Certification — Keep Your Gas Safe & Legal

Every new gas installation, appliance swap or regulator change legally needs certifying under the Gas (Safety and Measurement) Regulations 2010. At Southern Plumbing, our Certifying Gasfitter issues the certificate on completion — no third-party inspector, no three-week wait.

Founded 1982. 40+ years of gas work. Master Plumbers member 25+ years. Call 0800 484 353.

What Gas Certification Includes

  • Verification of manufacturer compliance — the appliance must be NZ-approved
  • Installation and testing to NZS 5601 parts 1 & 2
  • Pressure test of the complete installation
  • Commissioning to manufacturer tolerances — flame picture, pressure drop, flue updraught
  • Full safety check — clearances, ventilation, isolation valves
  • Customer instruction on safe appliance use
  • Gas Safety Certificate issued on the day
  • PS3 Producer Statement and Energy Work Certificate lodged with the PGDB

Before You Buy a Gas Appliance — Check Compliance

Many imported and auction-site gas appliances do not meet NZ standards — and legally cannot be certified here. That means a shiny new hob from overseas might be unusable once it arrives.

Quick compliance checklist:

  • Is the appliance registered with a NZ supplier or importer?
  • Does it carry an Australian/NZ gas appliance approval number?
  • Is it matched to your gas type (NG or LPG) — or convertible?
  • If second-hand — has the previous install been certified?

Call 0800 484 353 before you commit and we’ll check for you.

How Safe Is Gas, Really?

Gas is actually safer than electricity in terms of recorded injuries — provided the installation is certified and serviced. Explosions need a very specific mix of gas-to-air and an ignition source; in properly installed systems they’re extraordinarily rare.

Keep it that way:

  • Service appliances every 2 years minimum
  • Keep flammables away from gas hot water cylinders
  • Check flues are un-corroded and venting freely
  • Keep ventilation grills clear
  • Watch for yellow flame tipping — call us if you see it

If You Smell Gas — Right Now

  1. Turn off the cylinder valve or meter if safe to do so
  2. Open all windows and external doors
  3. Do not flick any electrical switches or light anything
  4. Get everyone out of the building
  5. Call us from outside the property: 0800 484 353

24/7 emergency response. Don’t wait to call — gas leaks don’t fix themselves and leaving it overnight turns a service call into a disaster.
