Aspen SPC Flooring Installation

Aspen SPC Luxury Flooring Installation Wellington

Aspen SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) is a hybrid floor that gives you the look of timber or stone with none of the cold-underfoot, grouting-cracks problems of tile. It clicks together over almost any existing surface, it’s 100% waterproof, and it goes down in a fraction of the time tile takes.

Southern installs Aspen SPC across Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast as part of bathroom, kitchen and laundry renovations — or as a standalone re-floor. 40+ years, Master Plumbers, fixed-price quotes. Call 0800 484 353.

What Is SPC Flooring?

SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite — sometimes also called rigid vinyl or rigid-core flooring. The core is natural limestone powder bonded with virgin PVC, topped with a printed wear layer that mimics oak, walnut, marble, slate or concrete.

That construction makes it dimensionally stable (it doesn’t expand or contract with temperature like laminate does), 100% waterproof through every layer, and tough enough for high-traffic kitchens and bathrooms. Aspen SPC is also VOC-free and non-toxic, so it’s safe for kids’ rooms and homes with allergies.

Bathroom & Kitchen SPC Flooring

Tile is the traditional choice for wet rooms, but it’s cold underfoot, slow to install, and the grout discolours within a few years. Aspen SPC gives you the same waterproof performance with timber or stone aesthetics, warmer underfoot, and a click-lock install that has the room back in use the same day.

It pairs especially well with bathroom renovations where you want a designer look without an extra week of tradies in the house, and with kitchen renovations where dropped pans and water spills are a daily reality.

SPC vs Tile, Vinyl & Laminate

  • vs Tile: Faster install, warmer underfoot, no grout to clean. SPC won’t crack if the substrate moves.
  • vs Sheet vinyl: SPC is dimensionally stable — no bubbling, lifting at edges or seam failure.
  • vs Laminate: SPC is fully waterproof. Spilled water on laminate causes the core to swell within hours.
  • vs Engineered timber: SPC handles wet rooms; timber doesn’t. SPC is also significantly cheaper.

The right choice depends on the room — for living areas you might still prefer real timber, but for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, SPC wins on durability and cost.

Installation — DIY or Professional?

The click-lock system is genuinely DIY-friendly for a single rectangular room with no obstacles. But almost every Wellington bathroom has a toilet pan, vanity, shower base and a doorway threshold — that’s where a tradie earns their keep. Bad cuts around fittings stand out for the life of the floor.

We level the substrate first (anything more than 3mm out gets self-levelling compound), check the moisture content, scribe-cut every edge, and silicone the perimeter. The room is back in use the next morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes — every layer, including the core, is waterproof. Spilled water sits on the surface and wipes up. There’s no swelling, lifting or warping like you’d see with laminate. That’s why it’s the preferred choice for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens.
