Installing Solar Panels in the Wellington Region
Panel prices keep dropping while your power bill keeps climbing. That’s why more Wellington households are going solar every year. Southern Plumbing designs and installs PV solar systems sized to your household’s actual load — grid-tied, off-grid, or hybrid with battery storage.
With 40+ years in the trade and a Certifying Plumber/Gasfitter on staff, we coordinate the plumbing, electrical and roofing sides of a solar install so you don’t end up chasing three subbies. Call 0800 484 353 for a site visit.
Is Wellington Suitable for PV Solar Panels?
Short answer: yes. Wellington actually gets more ultra-violet light than most parts of Germany — and Germany is one of the world’s biggest solar-power countries. We’re a windy city, but we’re not a dark one.
Ideal conditions:
- North-facing roof with unshaded area
- High per-kWh power rates (some Wellington accounts pay 50c+/kWh)
- Low daily line charges
- Household can use power during the day (heat pump, EV, hot water)
Less ideal: heavily shaded sections, south-facing pitch, small roof area, extreme wind or salt exposure, very low power rates.
Design of Solar Power & PV Systems
The right system depends on your roof, your load pattern and your goals. As a rough guide:
- 3-bedroom home with batteries — minimum 5kW array
- EV charging — 7 to 10kW
- Gas hob keeps inverter size down and avoids peak-load spikes
- Solar water heating (7kW of thermal collection) is often cheaper per-kWh than PV for hot water alone — see our solar hot water page
We model your annual load before quoting so the system you pay for actually matches the power you use. No oversizing, no undersizing.
Grid-Tied, Off-Grid or Hybrid
Three install types, different reasons to pick each:
- Grid-connected — excess power sold back to your retailer. Lowest upfront cost, no batteries required. Best for urban Wellington homes.
- Stand-alone (off-grid) — batteries do all the storage. Typical for rural or beach properties where line charges would cost $4,000+ over ten years.
- Hybrid — grid-connected but with battery backup. Keeps running through Wellington’s outages; sells surplus when batteries are full.
Our own Wellington install runs 24 panels + 2 batteries and has been grid-independent for 8 months of the year (EV charging aside). Winter heat pump load is where the grid still earns its keep.
Winter Loads Are the Big Problem
In winter we want heating — and that’s when we have the least sun. Oversizing the array to cover winter means wasting capacity the other nine months. The smarter play is to reduce the winter load before you size the panels.
- R2.7+ wall insulation
- Double-glazed windows
- Ceiling and underfloor insulation
- Efficient heat pump(s) instead of plug-in heaters
Spend money on the envelope first. Then the PV system you actually need is smaller, cheaper, and pays back faster. Read our power bill reduction guide for details.
Or Skip the Panels: Solar Hot Water
Hot water is the single biggest energy cost in most Wellington homes — up to 40% of the bill. A solar thermal collector captures around 7kW of thermal energy at a fraction of the cost of a PV array that would generate the equivalent electricity.
If hot water is your main driver (rather than offsetting the whole bill), solar thermal often pays back faster than PV. We install, repair and maintain both.

Battery Recycling & Restoration
Most “dead” lithium-ion batteries aren’t dead — they just have a few bad cells. We recover the good cells from power-tool and laptop batteries and re-purpose them into solar power-storage packs, rather than shipping them overseas as e-waste.
What we take:
- Power drill batteries (working or not)
- Laptop / notebook batteries
- Lithium-ion chemistries from notebooks and power tools
What we don’t take: cell-phone batteries, battery pouches, skateboard packs, or Nickel-Cadmium — take those to E-waste recycling.

EV Charging & Backup Power
If you’re charging an EV at home, solar changes the maths. Running a car off rooftop sunlight is effectively free kilometres — and it’s the single fastest way to pay down a PV install.
A 7kW to 10kW array sized with EV charging in mind means the car tops up during the day while you’re at work. Combined with battery storage, you get backup through Wellington’s storm-season outages too. Our solar + battery system runs our house 8 months of the year without buying grid power.

Why Southern Plumbing for Solar
A solar install touches plumbing (hot water integration), electrical (inverters, tie-in), roofing (brackets, flashings) and general building. Southern does all of it in-house. One contractor, one quote, one warranty to chase if anything goes wrong.
- 40+ years Wellington-based — we know which roofs and which suburbs actually suit PV
- Master Plumbers member 25+ years — deposit-protected, workmanship-guaranteed
- Certifying Plumber & Gasfitter on staff
- “Your Job On Time, or It’s Free” — book a day, we turn up that day
- We run our own PV + battery system — we install what we actually use
